Nana Ameyaw Boateng, the chief of Suoatwehene in Techiman South of the Bono East region, has signalled a strong warning against drug abuse among the youth. Speaking during the annual Yam Festival held at the Suoatwehene Palace, Nana Ameyaw Boateng cautioned the youth to halt the drug menace without hesitation or face the consequences.

According to the chief, failure to curb drug abuse threatens the future of the community as it jeopardises the next generation. Nana Ameyaw Boateng expressed deep concern that unless decisive action is taken now, the social and moral fabric of the youth will continue to deteriorate, leading to far-reaching negative consequences for the community’s progress.

The Yam Festival is a significant cultural event that serves not only to celebrate the harvest but also to remind the people of their rich traditions and heritage. Nana Ameyaw Boateng emphasised the festival’s significance in transforming the community by educating residents, particularly the youth, about their cultural heritage. He expressed worry that foreign cultures are gradually displacing local customs and urged the people to uphold and cherish their own culture through such traditional festivals.

Nana Ameyaw Boateng’s call to action was met with applause from community members who shared the belief that addressing drug abuse is crucial for the well-being of future generations. He urged parents, local leaders, and the youth themselves to work together to eradicate drug-related issues and to promote a healthy, culturally grounded lifestyle.

The chief’s comments during the festival underscore the urgent need for community-wide collaboration to protect the youth and preserve the cultural values that bind the people of Suoatwehene. The year’s celebration also served as a reminder of the collective responsibility to sustain the community’s heritage for generations to come.

The occasion was graced by Nana Boakye Ameyaw Aduana, Nifahene of the Techiman traditional area, and the queen mother of the Suoatwehene, Nana Amma Hu Boatemaa, among other personalities who also came in their numbers to pay homage to the chief and the queen mother. Nana Boakye Ameyaw praised the chief and the queen mother of the Suoatwe for their discipline cultivated in the area, particularly on drug abuse among the youth.
