The highlight of the occasion came when the chief of Krobohene, Dr Asa Akompanin, also the Kyedomhene of the Techiman Traditional Council in the Bobo East Region, recounted the struggles that preceded the establishment of the Krobo Nursing Training College. He noted that the challenges encountered before its founding were immense, recalling that the first hostel was an ICT centre, while an SDA church and a day-care facility served as their dining hall. In a gesture of sacrifice, Dr Asa Akompanin handed over his two-story building to serve as the hostel for female students, who accounted for about 70 per cent of the enrollment then.
The Krobohene expressed disappointment that they had not done anything for the institution, describing the situation as bitter and painful and adding that only God knows the role he played before its establishment. The up-and-down movement to meet the establishment was like magic, yet people don’t acknowledge that. Nana concluded that the outcome of the students’ demonstration will pave the way for the best result.
The Techiman North Municipal Chief Executive, Adom Johnson, and his team attended the occasion in their numbers. He disclosed that the Member of Parliament, Hon. Elizabeth Ofosu-Adjare, has assured that all road networks in Krobo, including the two hostels of the nursing training college, would be fixed soon once contractors are on-site.
Dr Asa Akompanin, Krobohene, Kyidomhehe and Kyidomhene of the Techiman Traditional Council have rounded off this year’s three-day yam festival at the Krobo Royal Palace with a thanksgiving service on Sunday.
The celebration, which opened on Friday, saw the traditional ruler break new ground by leading the festival with prayer—a practice he has upheld for over a decade and pioneered among chiefs of the Techiman Traditional Council. Dr Akompanin explained that he turned to prayer after the gods of Krobo were stolen and could not be traced. Realising the gods had proven powerless, since an individual could carry them off without consequence, he decided to make supplication his sole reliance. In keeping with this stance, the Krobohene accepts no form of alcohol during the festival, where traditional dishes such as yam fufu and ampesi are served to the public free of charge.
