Vesper refuses to grant Bond the $5 million necessary to re-buy, so he decides to
assassinate Le Chiffre, but American CIA agent Felix Leiter intervenes.
During the game, Bond discovers the poker tell that
Le Chiffre commits when he is bluffing. Bond meets up with Mathis, his contact in Montenegro, and Vesper
Lynd, a Treasury agent, who is assigned to look after
Bond’s handling of the $10 million buy-in.
Unlike in other Bond films the opening is filmed in black and white, and the gunbarrel sequence is
modified to form part of the opening titles.
Sir James, Moneypenny, Mata, and Cooper escape from their cell and fight
their way back to the casino director’s office, where Sir James
establishes that Vesper is a double agent. Mata uncovers a plan to sell compromising photographs of military leaders
from the US, USSR, China, and Great Britain at an “art auction”, another of Le Chiffre’s money-raising schemes.
Bond hires Vesper Lynd, a retired agent turned millionaire, to recruit baccarat expert Evelyn Tremble.
They implore Bond to come out of retirement to
deal with SMERSH, who have been eliminating their agents.
Believing that he could not compete with the Eon series, Feldman resolved to produce
the film as a satire.
