]]>Governor of the Bank of Ghana, Dr. Ernest Addison, has assured that discussions are far advanced for the central bank to provide some of its fleet of bullion vans coupled with getting helicopters from the air force to ensure the safe transportation of cash across the country.
His comments come on the back of an attack, in broad daylight, on a bullion van at Manso Mem in the Amansie West District of the Ashanti Region some few weeks ago, with the armed robbers absconding with a reported two large metal cases containing cash, and further killing the cashier in the process. It is against this background that many are calling for the use of bullet-proof vans to transport cash to protect both the transporters and the cash from armed robbers.
Asked by the B&FT in a press conference in Accra yesterday on what the regulator is doing to improve security in transporting cash across the country, Dr. Addison said the central bank wants to make available its secured bullion vans, together with a collaboration with the air force to air-lift cash to address such security issues.
He attributed this to the recent attack on bullion vans, it was about the third or so incidents we have heard quite recently. Most of the banks use pickup trucks and convert them into bullion vans. The Bank of Ghana has taken it seriously. He says they have held a meeting with the banks to decide on the way forward. At least, they have quite a fleet of bullion vans, and they have pleaded with bankers to collaborate to ensure a more secure way of transferring money to parts of the country.

(Reuters) – After two successive summers of travel chaos, U.S. airlines are going all out to prevent large-scale flight disruptions in the face of rising demand.
Carriers have trimmed flight schedules, beefed up staffing, and invested in airport infrastructure and technology to be ready for the busiest travel season of the year, starting with the traditional kickoff on the Memorial Day holiday weekend.
Summer tends to be the most profitable season for airlines, but it is also the busiest time of the year, raising the stakes.
Industry group Airlines for America estimates a record 256.8 million passengers will fly in the June-August quarter, up 1% over the 254.6 million passengers in the same period in 2019.
“It is kind of our Super Bowl,” United Airlines Chief Operating Officer Toby Enqvist told Reuters.
No one wants a repeat of last December, when an operational meltdown at Southwest Airlines resulted in almost 17,000 flight cancellations, disrupting travel plans for 2 million customers the desire to travel for many is high, however.
Jihane Jeanty, 36, has planned trips to Florida, Mexico City and Asia this summer, thanks to her flexible work arrangement.
The Los Angeles-based marketing director is unconcerned about flight delays and cancellations, even though they are “never fun.”
“It does happen, so I really don’t let it throw me anymore,” she said.
Nearly a quarter of flights were either canceled or delayed last summer, according to flight-tracking service FlightAware.
A recent survey by consultant J.D. Power shows customer satisfaction with major airlines is down significantly. The industry is also facing heat from the Biden administration, which wants airlines to compensate passengers with cash for lengthy delays.
Rising numbers of disputes between travellers and airlines globally are driving fresh legislation and calling for tougher enforcement of existing rules to protect consumers.
U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg said this week Memorial Day will be a “test to the system.” He said delay and cancellation rates were unacceptable last year and cannot happen again.
Overall, 42.3 million Americans are estimated to travel over the May 29 U.S. Memorial Day holiday weekend, AAA estimates.
The Federal Aviation Administration estimates nearly 313,000 flights will operate over the seven-day period ending May 30, up 4.5% from 2022 and just below 2019 pre-pandemic levels.
Demand is stronger for international trips this summer, driving up airfares to Europe and Asia to the highest level in more than five years, said online travel agency Hopper.
Carriers are performing far better this year, but a shortage of air traffic controllers has forced them to trim New York City-area flights. They are flying larger planes to compensate for fewer flights.
United CEO Scott Kirby has said the FAA needs more resources to handle the rising number of flights. Buttigieg has said the agency needs about 3,000 air traffic controllers but added weather and airline issues are to blame for most of the problems.
United said it has hired 7,000 employees including pilots, flight attendants, ramp workers, and customer service agents this year on top of 15,000 last year.
It is adding gates in New Jersey, Denver, and Chicago. It also has added five new hangars worldwide to repair its planes, Enqvist said.
Rival Delta Air Lines Inc has hired and trained over 25,000 employees to handle the summer travel rush. Southwest said it will operate 7% more flights compared with last year, with 15% more employees.
American Airlines COO David Seymour said the airline has learned from the past. American has invested in technology that allows it to plan for weather events in advance and has tasked general managers with ensuring adequate staffing at its vendors.
“We are really laser-focused on building a plan that has resilience,” he said in an interview.

France has banned domestic short-haul flights where train alternatives exist, in a bid to cut carbon emissions.
The law came into force two years after lawmakers had voted to end routes where the same journey could be made by train in under two-and-a-half hours.
The ban all but rules out air travel between Paris and cities including Nantes, Lyon, and Bordeaux, while connecting flights are unaffected.
Critics have described the latest measures as “symbolic bans”.
Laurent Donceel, interim head of industry group Airlines for Europe (A4E), told the AFP news agency that “banning these trips will only have minimal effects” on CO2 output.
He added that governments should instead support “real and significant solutions” to the issue.
Airlines around the world have been severely hit by the coronavirus pandemic, with the website Flightradar24 reporting that the number of flights last year was down almost 42% from 2019.
The French government had faced calls to introduce even stricter rules.
France’s Citizens’ Convention on Climate, which was created by President Emmanuel Macron in 2019 and included 150 members of the public, had proposed scrapping plane journeys where train journeys of under four hours existed.
But this was reduced to two-and-a-half hours after objections from some regions, as well as the airline Air France-KLM.
French consumer group UFC-Que Choisir had earlier called on lawmakers to retain the four-hour limit.
“On average, the plane emits 77 times more CO2 per passenger than the train on these routes, even though the train is cheaper and the time lost is limited to 40 minutes,” it said.
It also called for “safeguards that [French national railway] SNCF will not seize the opportunity to artificially inflate its prices or degrade the quality of rail service”.

]]>Tesla CEO Elon Musk teased two new electric vehicles Tuesday at the automaker’s 2023 annual shareholder’s meeting. The billionaire executive even claimed that Tesla is already in the process of building a new product.
“I just want to emphasize that we are actually building a new product,” said Musk. “We are actually designing a new product. We’re not sitting on our hands here.”
Musk went on to say that there are two new products in the pipeline, and that “both the design of the products and the manufacturing techniques are head and shoulders above anything else that is present in the industry.”
As the CEO spoke, a rendered image of a vehicle silhouette appeared on the screen behind him, giving the audience a teaser of one of the vehicles. It’s possible that vehicle might be the $25,000 hatchback that Musk mentioned back in 2020 during the company’s battery day. He said this meeting wasn’t the place to make a new product announcement, and that there would be a proper product launch eventually.
Musk wasn’t clear on stage what he meant by “building” the vehicle. It’s likely that a prototype is being built, rather than a production volume vehicle.

Tesla previously teased two new models at its Investor Day in March, displaying a photo with Tesla’s entire lineup and two unveiled car outlines. One of the vehicles looked to be the size of a van and the other the size of a sedan or hatchback. Both are expected to be more affordable vehicles that sell at much higher volumes.
“Elon’s guess is that we’ll probably make in excess of 5 million units per year of these two models combined,” said Musk.
During Investor Day, Tesla also confirmed plans to build a gigafactory in Mexico, which is where many have speculated that production of the hatchback, commonly referred to as the “Model 2” by Tesla fans, will be built.
There has been some speculation that the second vehicle Musk teased will be the robotaxi he has referred to in the past. An audience member asked Musk for an update on Teslas being used for ride-share, and Musk responded that ride-share “will not really be relevant in the self-driving world.”
The executive went on to say that Tesla is getting close to achieving full self-driving, something Musk has claimed multiple times over the past several years.
During the shareholder meeting, Tesla also announced that former CTO JB Straubel will return to the automaker’s board and that the company aims to try some traditional advertising methods to promote new features.

Francisco De Jesus told King 5 News that the cabin crew wrongly suspected him of human trafficking.
He was traveling with his 13-year-old daughter when security stopped him.
He said flight attendants spoke to his daughter while he was using the restroom.
A father said airport security stopped him after flight attendants suspected him of human trafficking.
Francisco De Jesus told King 5 News he was flying with his 13-year-old daughter from Seattle-Tacoma International Airport to Charlotte, North Carolina earlier this month.
While he was using the plane’s restroom, he said flight attendants gave his daughter wings and asked if she was OK, where she was going, and who she was going to meet.
After the flight landed in Charlotte, De Jesus told King 5 that personnel, including the airport’s head of security, met them after they deplaned.
He said he was told that flight attendants were trained to look for the signs of human trafficking: “At that point, my heart just sank.”
However, De Jesus said the airport security staff “saw the situation for what it was immediately” after answering a few questions, and was allowed on his way.
The passenger told the outlet that he contacted American Airlines for an explanation but didn’t receive a response at first.
“My question that I would like to have answered is how did they get to label me as a human trafficker? I had my iPad; we were watching a movie. She had her phone. I mean, these are things that I thought a dad and a daughter traveling do,” De Jesus told King 5.
An American Airlines representative told the outlet: “Our frontline team members are trained to navigate a variety of safety issues, including recognizing the potential signs of human trafficking. We strive to create a positive, welcoming environment for everyone who travels with us and apologize for any misunderstanding that may have occurred.”
The airline had also contacted De Jesus by Friday, King 5 reported.
American Airlines didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment from an Insider made outside normal working hours.

Delta Air Lines (DAL) – Get Free Report prospects are persevering to seek out themselves annoyed over a well-known annoyance.
In April, the issue was extra extensively reported on social media than now, so hope does persist that it is getting higher.
DON’T MISS: Why Airlines May Have To Pay You For Canceling Your Flight
The irritation facilities across the services are lengthy to maintain occasions as prospects take to the telephone to report points or try to assemble info.
“Been waiting on hold for @Delta for over an hour and a half,” tweeted Michael Lane (@1MichaelLane). “I’ve probably been on the phone with them 5–6 hours over 3 calls involving an upcoming trip. This is frustrating!”
But one Delta buyer had a very inventive method of coping with the problem.
Maria D’Ambrosio, who performs French horn in Montana for the Bozeman and Helena symphonies, pulled her instrument out of its case and performed together with the on-hold music.
The tune was Harriet Goldberg’s “My Time to Fly.”
“I’ve done a lot of arranging in the past, and have also done a lot of transcribing by ear,” she instructed Miles Quest. “This was a fun way to pass the time, and it was fun to share that with an online audience.”
All airways have their complications, however, telephone service appears to be a very tough one for Delta.
“When bad weather hits, more passengers call in than normal, and overwhelm phone lines,” wrote View From the Wing. “Of course, bad weather is predictable most of the time. That’s what meteorologists are for. But while an airline may have overtime, they in general staff on average (which includes making customers, at least non-elite customers, wait). They don’t staff based on the days that customer needs will peak.”

SHANGHAI/BEIJING (Reuters) -China’s market regulator said Tesla Inc will fix software in more than 1 million vehicles to reduce the chance of accidents, the regulator said on Friday.
The action is described as a product recall under Chinese regulations, the regulator said, but it was not immediately clear if drivers might need, or would be eligible, to return vehicles to Tesla for refunds.
From May 29, the U.S. automaker will issue over-the-air software updates to 1.1 million units of its Model S, Model X, Model 3, and Model Y cars, both imported and China-made, the State Administration for Market Regulation said in a statement.
The regulator said the vehicles concerned did not allow drivers to turn off regenerative braking or provide enough warnings when drivers stepped on the accelerator pedal hard, which, combined, could increase the risk of collision.
The update will restore the option of switching off regenerative braking and warn drivers when they step hard on the accelerator pedal, it added.
Tesla was not immediately available for comment.
Regenerative braking works to save energy from the process of slowing a car, feeding the surplus to batteries to increase its driving range. Tesla had disabled the option to switch off the technique on cars produced after 2020.
“I view a software update ‘recall’ as fairly mild relative to major recalls where customers have to take their cars to get serviced to fix an equipment issue,” said Seth Goldstein, analyst at Morningstar.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said on Friday it “is aware of the recall in China and is gathering more information from the manufacturer.”
Some consumers in China welcomed the technology, also known as one-pedal driving, as it enabled them to bring a vehicle to a complete halt without the use of the brake pedal.
However, others complained it could confuse drivers and increase the risks of misstepping on accelerators.
Chinese police have been investigating a crash involving a Model Y car in which a motorcyclist and a high school girl died, and three people were injured when the driver lost control of the vehicle last November.
At the time, Tesla said videos showed the car’s brake lights were not on while it was speeding and data showed issues such as there being no action to step on the brakes throughout its journey.
Tesla shares were down about 1.3% on Friday in New York.

]]>Pickup trucks still dominate vehicle sales in the United States, but electric vehicle manufacturer Tesla has cracked the top 10 for the first time. Tesla’s Model Y crossover was the sixth best-selling vehicle in the U.S. in 2022, but it might soon have internal competition from the company’s Model 3, which now has a sticker price starting below $40,000.
The Model 3 — a four-door sedan with rear-wheel drive — is already popular and is the least expensive model in Tesla’s line. As reported by CNBC, it currently sits at 13th place in 2022 vehicle sales at 211,641 units, per Motor Intelligence data.
Cutting $2,000 off the Model 3, it has a base cost of $39,990, making it a relative “bargain” among EVs. This is true even though it is still more expensive than many hybrid plug-ins and 2023 EV models, like the Chevy Bolt EUV, the Mazda MX-30, the Hyundai Kona Electric, and the Kia Nero EV, per Edmund’s rankings.
However, the Model 3 is now less than the average price of a new car, making it a more affordable option for consumers looking to switch over to an electric vehicle. Back in February, when the Model 3 was priced at $42,990, Bloomberg reported that it was selling for $4,930 less than the average new American vehicle.
This is the sixth time Tesla has cut prices on its electric vehicles this year, and the second time this month. As CNN reported, the decision to lower prices and ensure lower short-term profits were necessary, according to CEO Elon Musk.
“While we reduced prices considerably in early Q1, it’s worth noting that our operating margin remains among the best in the industry,” Musk said. “We’ve taken a view that pushing for higher volumes and a larger fleet is the right choice here versus a lower volume and higher margins.”
Unfortunately for existing and future Model 3 owners, the price cuts, which were announced prior to the company’s first-quarter earnings report of April 19, coincide with the reductions in EV credits imposed by the U.S. Treasury which went into effect April 18. Credits for the Model 3 have been slashed to $3,750, but all other Tesla models will still be eligible for the full $7,500 credit as mandated by the Inflation Reduction Act.
According to Engadget, Tesla also cut the price on the consumer’s favorite Model Y. The base, Long Range, and Performance Model Y vehicles have been trimmed by $3,000 and now cost $46,990, $49,990, and $53,990, respectively.

However, JAL has since regained profitability and has focused on improving its customer experience and expanding its network.
JAL offers a variety of classes for its passengers, including First Class, Business Class, Premium Economy, and Economy. In First Class, passengers can enjoy spacious seats, personal entertainment screens, and a gourmet menu created by Michelin-starred chefs. Business Class passengers also have access to comfortable seats, as well as priority boarding and baggage handling.
JAL is known for its high level of customer service, with flight attendants trained in the traditional Japanese hospitality known as Omotenashi. The airline also offers a frequent flyer program called JAL Mileage Bank, which allows members to earn and redeem miles for flights and other rewards.
In recent years, JAL has focused on expanding its international network, particularly in the Americas. The airline has also invested in new technology, including a partnership with Boom Supersonic to develop a new supersonic aircraft that could travel from Tokyo to San Francisco in just 6 hours.

FAQ: What people ask about the best airlines
Does the best airline always mean the most expensive option?
No, the best airline for you depends on your preferences and budget. While some premium airlines offer exceptional service and amenities, there are also budget-friendly options that provide a good balance between cost and quality.
How can I determine if an airline’s frequent flier program is worthwhile?
Compare the earning and redemption rates, partner airlines, and other benefits such as priority boarding and lounge access. Evaluate these factors based on your travel preferences and frequency to determine if the program is suitable for you.
What factors should I consider when choosing the best airline?
Consider factors such as safety, on-time performance, customer service, inflight amenities, frequent flier programs, and ticket prices. Research and compare different airlines based on these factors to find the best one for your travel needs.
How important is the airline’s safety record when choosing the best option?
The safety record is an essential factor to consider as it ensures a secure and comfortable journey. Consult third-party sources like the International Air Transport Association (IATA) and AirlineRatings.com to review the safety records of different airlines.
Can I rely on customer reviews to choose the best airline?
Customer reviews can provide valuable insights into the airline’s overall service quality, but it’s essential to read multiple reviews to get a balanced perspective. Websites like TripAdvisor, Google Reviews, and airline-specific forums can be useful resources.
Are there any reliable sources to find the best airline rankings?
Yes, organizations like Skytrax, AirlineRatings.com, and J.D. Power provide annual rankings and ratings based on various factors like safety, customer satisfaction, and product offerings. These can be useful starting points to identify the best airlines.
