He said public officials must be prepared to account for their actions and accept legitimate criticism; however, journalists and bloggers should not use their platforms to insult, demean or spread false claims about individuals.

Hon. Agyei Mensah alleged that one particular journalist frequently insults him with impunity. He stressed that while challenges within the municipality should be reported, the media should also acknowledge positive developments and achievements.

The mayor said some media practitioners require professional and psychological support to help address behaviour that promotes hostility, personal attacks, and abusive language. He appealed to journalists, bloggers and social media commentators to protect public peace by verifying information before publication and avoiding inflammatory remarks.

The Bono East Director of the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice, Lawyer Nana Kwaku Kumi, charged the media with upholding ethical standards and avoiding bias, misinformation, and personal attacks. He noted that the media plays a frontline role in informing the public and shaping national debate, making responsible reporting essential.

Lawyer Kumi explained that hate speech can include language that degrades, threatens, or harasses a person or group, harming their dignity, reputation, and social standing. He added that hateful expression may target people because of their ethnicity, religion, political affiliation, or other identity.

He further reminded participants that freedom of speech is a constitutional right, but it is not unlimited. People can be held accountable when their speech violates others’ rights, damages reputations through false allegations, incites violence, or threatens public order. The discussion therefore encouraged citizens and media practitioners to express opinions firmly but respectfully.

“Our culture will completely die if we do not attach seriousness to it,” declared Nana Boakye Yiadom Pemtemprem II. He stressed that parents must show genuine interest by attending events such as the Aponor Festival, ensuring children learn these traditions firsthand. “Education in schools builds the mind, but festivals like Aponor nurture the soul of our people.

The Aponor Festival is a vibrant annual celebration among the Techiman people of the Bono East region, with profound cultural value. Apour is held yearly in March to  honours the supreme deity of Techiman, the gods and fertility, who is believed to protect the land’s bounty. The festival features elaborate durbars where chiefs in resplendent Batakari cloth and traditional regalia perform libations, drumming and dancing in Apour style, with people occupying all the major streets in the one-week-long celebration. The Municipal Chief Executive, Hon. Johnson Adom, has lauded the government’s no-fee stress policy in the public universities for easing economic burdens on parents while outlining bold plans to overhaul education in the Techiman North Municipality.

Speaking to students at the 69th Independence Day celebration, Adom highlighted how the policy has transformed access to university education. “Needy students will now receive support through student loans, repayable only after they secure full employment,” he assured the policy’s sustainability.

The MCE revealed ongoing government efforts to eliminate the controversial double-track system in select senior high schools, promising a return to a unified academic calendar. He also stressed the reintroduction of “total discipline” in schools to foster a conducive learning environment.

At the basic education level, Adom committed to phasing out the outdated practice of pupils studying under trees, ensuring modern infrastructure for all in the municipality.

These remarks were made at the 69th Independence Day celebration, where 12 schools—including three senior high institutions—participated in a spirited march past. Ameya JHS emerged as the overall best performer, clinching top honours.

Many private universities are collapsing under financial strain; the government’s intervention can help several students to access higher education. “He added that university campuses benefit the community through businesses and banking. The VVU Hospital benefits not only the nearby community but the entire region and beyond. A university with such a facility can be upgraded to a teaching hospital if the government provides the necessary support.

VVU Techiman, blessed with a serene natural environment perfect for focused study, offers a compelling alternative. Hostel and semester fees total just GH¢4,000, including spacious on-campus accommodations that eliminate transport hassles. Nana Akumfi Ameyaw Kyeremeh, who rose through the ranks of the GES to become a Deputy D irector before his retirement, is widely acknowledged for his pivotal role in shaping Kwarteng Ankomah SHS into a model institution. His tenure saw remarkable improvements in academic performance, infrastructure, discipline, and community involvement.

Colleagues, students, and local leaders describe his time at the school as a turning point. Under his guidance, Kwarteng Ankomah SHS expanded its enrollment, improved its examination results, and attracted dedicated teaching staff. Classroom blocks were established during his tenure, reflecting his commitment to holistic academic growth.

Nana was accompanied by his beautiful wife, Kissiwaa Vida Ameyaw, and their children, as well as the entire family, who came in large numbers to grace the colourful occasion.

Nana Ameyaw was more than just an administrator; he was a mentor, a reformer, and a father figure to both staff and students.  The headmaster of the school says his leadership created a culture of excellence and discipline that continues to inspire.

On January 15, 2018, Nana Akumfi Ameyaw was enstooled as the Chief of Ejura Donmankuma, further solidifying his influence within the community. In his capacity as a traditional leader, he has consistently championed education, youth empowerment, and development. Community members commend his efforts in supporting needy students, lobbying for school resources, and promoting girl-child education.

As a chief and educationist, Nana Ameyaw has uniquely blended cultural stewardship with academic advocacy, using his platform to bridge the gap between tradition and modern education. He was the overall best mathematics teacher at the second-cycle institution in the Techiman Municipality of the Bono East region in 2012.

Former students of Kwarteng Ankomah SHS continue to speak of his legacy with admiration. Alumni groups have initiated plans to build a block in his name in recognition of his service.

The old students say Nana built the foundation for many of them who are now medical doctors, lawyers, lecturers, and more. His influence went beyond the classroom, the student lamented.

What perhaps compelled Oheneyere Nana Konadu to tears was the big crowd and the dignitaries that attended her 60th retirement ceremony. The giants of the Ghana Education Service, other heads of institutions, including the husband, Nana Fosu Gyeabour Hansuahene, former Bono East regional minister, Hon Kofi Amoakohene joined in the 60th cake-cutting ceremony which ended with mixed-feeling due to the departure of Oheneyere Nana Ampadu.

Oheneyere Nana Ampadu completed middle school in 1980 and continued from Agogo Nursing Training College in 1980 -82. She was able to climb the ladder to obtain her masters in Human Resource Management in 2012. She taught as a classroom teacher, became a headmistress, and held several other positions before her retirement as the regional GES HR personnel.

The retirement ceremony of Oheneyere Nana Ampadu was described as unique and unprecedented, top retired GES officials retired and those in offices came in their numbers to fill over 1,500 seating capacity of the Hansua Ultral Modern Palace. Oheneyere Nana Ampadu received several citation plaques from the traditional council, GES, CHASS, CODE, TEWU NAGRAT and GNAT among others. The Banmuhene of the Techiman Traditional Area, Nana Fosu Gyeabour was also awarded for his contributions to education in the Bono East region.

Nana Fosu Gyeabour, the chief of Hansua described the retirement ceremony as one of the most colourful occasions being held at the palace. Nana Fosu Gyeabour commended all for gracing the ceremony to a successful end. Oheneyere Nana Ampadu finally took to the dancing floor in honour of her maker.

The MCE, Benjamin Garko, addressing the school, says the NPP government has done a lot for Techiman Senior High School and will do more when Ghanaians vote for the party in 2024 to continue their projects. He says the Free SHS is a key manifestation of the NPP when it comes to education. He admitted that though there are some challenges with the Free SHS, these will be fixed when the NPP is given the chance again.

The 60-year-old school has over 3,500 students including 1,720 girls will need more structures to accommodate more students on campus to enhance teaching and learning. Despite the deficits, the school is one of the best in sporting activities and science. The school’s headmaster, Moses Kofi Adu made the plea to the MCE, Benjamin Garko to consider. He praised the MCE for the 40 dual desks. The headmaster, Moses Kofi Adu welcomes groups, associations and individuals to aid the school in the mentioned challenges.

Some students who spoke off-camera also complained about some dormitory blocks without louvre blades and nets, creating easy access to mosquitoes. This is a health threat which needs immediate attention. Limited washrooms were not excluded!

A short rainfall pattern will worsen the insecurity food situation in Ghana based on the data collected. The most people likely to be hit by the food challenges are in the northern part of Ghana.  Food insecurity is not only peculiar to Ghana. It is estimated that over 2.8 billion people in the world are unable to afford healthy food diets. Unhealthy diets have several ill health implications including, malnutrition, micronutrient deficiencies and obesity among others.

Action aid has been one of the key players supporting several farming communities in the Bono East region with education and funds. Observing World Food Day in Techiman, several of the action aid beneficiaries came in numbers with some of their foodstuffs while others also cooked local dishes that matched with the theme of World Food Day, ‘right to food for a better life and better future’.

The chairman of the occasion, Nana Kwaw Adams of Forikro, condemned illegal mining and the water bodies pollution.  Nana was not happy with the cocoa reduction in recent times.  Nana says, galamsey taking over everything in Ghana is suicidal.  He says it will be useless to get all wealth and die shortly, he referred to our water bodies’ pollution.

Nana pleaded with the people to propagate the local foods. He told the farmers to be careful when using agrochemicals on crops, particularly vegetables. Nana urged the people in the authority to stop illegal mining at all costs.
