The Western cultural influence and the spread of Christianity and Islam have significantly altered the social fabric of African communities, especially in the Techiman Traditional Area. Nana Owusu Gyare, the Akwamuhene of Techiman, speaking to Nkyeremu News, discussed how the fear and respect for indigenous deities once played a vital role in maintaining order and reducing crime, including adultery and theft, within the community. Nana said this when Taa Mensah Bosomfour of the Techiaman traditional area was celebrating his yearly Kwafie Yam festival at his palace.

According to Nana Owusu Gyare, traditional African societies had deep-rooted systems of morality enforced by spiritual beliefs. The deities, such as Techiman, Taa Mensah, Buokyiriwa, Apape, and others, were believed to have the power to act instantly to punish wrongdoers. This spiritual accountability fostered a climate of fear that ensured community members adhered strictly to laws and customs.

“In the past, adultery was seen as a serious crime, and anyone who committed such offences would face severe consequences,” Nana Owusu Gyare explained. “Curses were raised, and the wrongdoer was compelled to confess or face dire repercussions in a short time. Such beliefs created a strong deterrent against immoral behaviour.”

However, with the advent of Western culture and the widespread adoption of Christianity and Islam, the traditional African belief systems and their practices have been overshadowed. The Akwamuhene believes this shift has contributed to a decline in respect for traditional spiritual powers and a corresponding rise in crime and immoral acts.

He stated, “The introduction of the Bible and the Quran has silenced the powers of the traditional deities. While these religions brought valuable elements such as education, healthcare, and broader worldviews, they have also caused the rich African cultural heritage to be forgotten.”

Nana Owusu Gyare lamented that the loss of traditional reverence has weakened the social fabric that once kept crime rates low. He stressed the importance of integrating the strengths of African culture with modern advancements to restore communal harmony and discipline.

“The fear and respect for the local deities helped to reduce crime, stealing, and adultery. Mentioning these deities to those involved in wrongdoing instilled fear and compelled them to speak the truth,” he said. “We must remember and revive this aspect of our culture if we are serious about curbing crime in our societies.”

While acknowledging the benefits brought by Western influence, including the establishment of schools and hospitals, the Akwamuhene emphasised that these advancements do not negate the value of indigenous traditions. He called for a balanced approach that embraces education and religion while honouring and revitalising Africa’s cultural heritage.

The conversation around the role of traditional beliefs in contemporary African societies is complex. Yet, Nana Owusu Gyare’s perspective highlights the potential of blending ancestral practices with modern systems to foster a safer, more respectful community.

As communities navigate the challenges of modernisation, the message from Techiman’s leadership underscores a broader sentiment across Ghana and Africa, a call to remember and cherish a culture that once served as a foundation for moral conduct and social order.

A handle on X (previously Twitter), @eddie_wrt, posted a video showing the gun-wielding guys who broke into the auditorium during the ceremony, attacking members of the congregation.

The congregation was being robbed by armed bandits at gunpoint as the preacher was finishing his sermon when an instant of anarchy broke out.

Targeted particularly, the robbers took phones and valuables from the preacher, who was thought to be the assembly’s leader, and looted the other worshippers as well.

One of the bandits came up to the pulpit and forced the minister to show them where the money was kept.

This is a clear indication that the end is very near!

He described Monsignor, John Boakye Gyan popularly called Farther Boakye as a philanthropist to the needy. He said, Father Boakye has no biological children though, but more than 20 children have been named after him due to his support and the good relationship he built with the church

When it comes to education, he has supported several people to attain their tertiary education, some are now medical doctors, lawyers, teachers, nurses and notably, the priesthood among other professions. The support of Father Boakye according to the congregation has no barrier.

Father Boakye who understands the financial challenges ahead of the church has helped to establish sachet water in most of the parishes he served to boost their revenue. He also played a major role to boost the finances of the BACCOD. He has been championing the establishment of churches and school buildings, he has truly made an indelible mark in his 40 years career as a true man of God.

The 40th anniversary of Father Boakye was short notice as he wanted it to be a normal ceremony, but it turned into a grand one as the entire Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church of over 1,500 seated capacity was almost filled to capacity. This attests to his human relationship with the church.

20 Catholic Priests including Monsignor Kyereme, Pastors, Reverend Sisters, Choir Groups Catholic Women’s Associations and the congregation made the occasion more colourful than expected.

Monsignor Boakye John Boakye Gyan was ordained in 1983 by the late Bishop, James Kwadwo Owusu in Kwasibuokrom SS Peter and Paul Catholic Church. His first appointment was at Yeji Catholic Church, he was later transferred to Nkoranza, and from there he went for further studies in Ireland. Father Boakye spends most of his sabbatical leave in the United States of America.

Father Boakye was bestowed the Monsignore title in 2009 by the late, Pope, Benedict XVI. The title, Monsignor, is one of the most distinguished positions in the Catholic Church.

He returned to Techiman St Paul’s Catholic Church and spent over a decade at the parish. His chalk successes in the then parish are still fresh in the minds of the people. Father Boakye served the Catholic Church of Nsuatre and Sampa. He was sent to Wenchi our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church as the dean. It is most likely, that Father Boakye will retire in Wenchi.

More than 100 people were being kept in so-called traditional wards (mud-walled huts with brick beds) built around the church in Nyamhinza village, Misungwi district, in the north-western region of Mwanza – with no medical treatment or food being provided.

Some had been there for up to a month and they were required to find food for themselves until they fully recovered.

They were found after locals alerted the police that some people were dying after leaving hospitals, including a woman who had joined the church soon after giving birth to twins.

At the end of last week, the police took the sick people back to hospitals for treatment. They are now investigating possible deaths and whether there are bodies buried nearby.

Mwanza regional police commander, Wilbroad Mutafungwa, told journalists on Wednesday that initial investigations didn’t show there were people buried there but they were still keeping a close watch.

He confirmed the arrests of the suspects, church leaders William Masum and his wife Kabula Lushika, saying they didn’t have permits to conduct worship and prayer activities or to provide traditional healing services. They have not commented on the accusations.

“We are now doing a detailed investigation, including interrogating the suspects. Meanwhile, I ask locals with classified information that will help the investigation to come forward and talk to the police,” he said.
