<\/p>\nA rookie in the 2023 SI Swimsuit Issue,\u00a0Jennifer Atil\u00e9mile has been in the modeling industry for years, but the 32-year-old chose to pursue her education before jumping into it full-time. Since then, she\u2019s worked with brands like Victoria\u2019s Secret, MERIT, and Clarins. Atil\u00e9mile graduated from Monash University in Melbourne, where she obtained a double master’s in international relations and journalism. While in school, she wrote her thesis on the ethical rights of women garment workers in the fashion industry, a topic she continues to speak passionately about today.<\/p>\n

We recently caught up with\u00a0Atil\u00e9mile during magazine launch week events at\u00a0the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino – Hollywood, Fla., where she shared more about her stance on\u00a0ethical fashion and labor rights.<\/p>\n
\u201cI speak up so much about ethical labor treatments and like workers\u2019 rights, fair wages, and I think it kind of transcends into everything that\u2019s happening right now, especially even in Hollywood and the writers’ strike,\u201d she explains. \u201cEveryone’s just asking for a fair wage. Why can\u2019t the people that make our clothes also get a fair wage, specifically when they are women of color and from lower socioeconomic backgrounds?<\/p>\n
Atil\u00e9mile admits that as a model, she\u2019s part of a polluting industry\u2014the fashion sector does in fact contribute up to 10% of global carbon emissions each year. With that awareness in mind, she loves shopping vintage in order to avoid fast fashion, which often involves poor working and environmental conditions. Depop and\u00a0Vestiaire Collective are two of her favorites\u2014but again,\u00a0Atil\u00e9mile knows that shopping vintage isn\u2019t viable a solution for everyone.<\/p>\n
\u201cBeing able to shop vintage is not a luxury [that\u2019s affordable] to everybody. If you are from a lower socioeconomic background, you kind of have to go to fast fashion because that\u2019s all you can afford,\u201d she says. \u201cIf you\u2019re a plus-size woman, you can only go to fast fashion because a lot of stores still don\u2019t stock [an inclusive range of] sizes. It\u2019s this weird ethical question of, well, we need to include everyone, but also not everyone can access the privilege of shopping sustainably.\u201d<\/p>\n
One of\u00a0Atil\u00e9mile\u2019s personal favorite vintage fashion finds is a 1991 Versace dress once worn on the runway by Claudia\u00a0Schiffer, which she says perfectly sums up her \u201cmermaid princess\u201d vibe.<\/p>\n
\u201cThat\u2019s also why I love vintage fashion because there\u2019s very much a unique style that comes with being a vintage shopper because not everyone has [that item],\u201d she says. \u201cYou\u2019re not like part of the mainstream, you\u2019re unique and your own person.\u201d<\/p>\n
