{"id":25682,"date":"2023-06-30T19:07:55","date_gmt":"2023-06-30T18:07:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/nkyeremunews.com\/?p=25682"},"modified":"2023-06-30T19:09:42","modified_gmt":"2023-06-30T18:09:42","slug":"i-against-ghana-card-ci-kennedy-agyapong","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nkyeremunews.com\/index.php\/2023\/06\/30\/i-against-ghana-card-ci-kennedy-agyapong\/","title":{"rendered":"I, Against Ghana Card CI \u2013 Kennedy Agyapong!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Assin Central Member of Parliament Kennedy Agyapong has said on several occasions that, he is against the (CI) that is seeking to make the Ghana Card the sole identification document for voter registration.<\/p>\n<p>He described this move as a bogus decision to make the card the only identification document.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking on Sompa FM, in Kumasi, over the weekend, Mr Agyapong who is seeking to be elected flagbearer of the NPP said \u2018\u2019I am against it. He said it was a bogus decision.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have a whole Ghana passport, but you (EC) claim that to register to vote you can\u2019t use it to register as a voter. &#8216;What makes me a Ghanaian&#8217;? It is my passport, he said.<\/p>\n<p>This is contrary to the views of the Chair of the Electoral Commission (EC) Jean Mensa who told Parliament that the use of the Ghana Card as the sole identification document for voter registration will ensure a credible voter roll.<\/p>\n<p>Mrs Mensa said it will also prevent minors and foreigners from getting onto the electoral register to vote.<\/p>\n<div class=\"5437b360aeb816495f3f85326a8201f3\" data-index=\"2\"><\/div>\n<p>Briefing Parliament on the (CI) that is seeking to make the Ghana Card the only document for voter registration, on Tuesday, February 28 Madam Jean Mensa said \u201cThe use of only Ghana Card will ensure and guarantee the credibility of the register and elections, prevent enrolment of minors, prevent foreigners from voting, eliminate the guarantor system which is prone to abuse.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Ghana Card will not be used for voting in 2024, it will be used to register,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Regarding a revelation by Tamale South Member of Parliament Haruna Iddrisu that there were about 3.5million people without Ghana Card, she said the (NIA) has told the commission that \u201d there are 3.5 blank cards in the warehouse, money have been released and funds are being released.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Minority has been raising issues against the proposed CI on several occasions.<\/p>\n<p>On Thursday, February 23, they rejected officials from the EC and the National Identification (NIA) who were in Parliament to brief the House on the proposed CI.<\/p>\n<p>The Member of Parliament of Tamale South Haruna Iddrisu said that the Minority is opposed to any move by the EC to use the Ghana Card as the sole identification document for voter registration. He says any such move by the EC will hurt the right to vote and be voted for.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking on the Big Issue via telephone on TV3 Monday, February 27, the former Minority Leader indicated that there are 3.5 million people who are without Ghana cards.<\/p>\n<p>He questioned whether the EC is going to deny all these 3.5 million people from exercising their right to vote because they do not have a Ghana Card.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is the right to vote and be voted for, the NDC will defend that right,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are contesting the use of Ghana Card as the sole reference for purposes of getting registered as a voter,\u201d he said.
