At the 17th annual urologists’ surgeons meeting held at the Eusbett Hotel in Sunyani, Dr Bosometwe Boateng, popularly known as Dr BB, called on all men aged 25 and above to undergo regular urological screening to prevent prostate abnormalities (PA) and address the growing crisis of male infertility.<\/p>\n

Dr. Boateng emphasized that early detection is critical for the successful diagnosis and treatment of prostatic conditions and associated infertility. He cited alarming global statistics indicating that approximately 58% of infertility cases are attributable to male factors, while 42% stem from female factors, yet societal stigma often leads men to wrongly apportion blame to women for childlessness wrongly. Globally, an estimated 1.4 million men have been tested and diagnosed with infertility, a reality Dr. Boateng described as “sad” given the persistent cultural misconceptions.<\/p>\n

The urologist highlighted that urogenital infections and prostatic disorders are among the most common correctable causes of male fertility issues, with many affected men remaining asymptomatic until complications arise. To combat this, the Sunyani Urology Hospital operates 24 hours daily, excluding Saturdays and Sundays, and is equipped with modern diagnostic and therapeutic technology for managing PA and infertility. The facility boasts a team of highly trained doctors and nurses dedicated to providing comprehensive patient care. Lack of access to urology care remains a major challenge to healthcare provision in the Bono region, Dr BB said.<\/p>\n

Despite these advancements, Dr Boateng issued a plea to the government and healthcare stakeholders to provide additional specialised equipment to enhance diagnostic accuracy and treatment outcomes for patients. He noted that limited access to urology services has historically resulted in late patient presentation, underscoring the need for expanded infrastructure and resources. Lack of access to urology care remains a major challenge to healthcare provision in Ghana.<\/p>\n

Dr BB expressed worry about the patient ratio to a doctor; he said attending to 150 patients in a day is considered the least attendance!<\/p>\n
