Ghana is on course to deliver one of Africa\u2019s most transformative highways as the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) engineers have cleared 176.6 kilometres of the 176-kilometre corridor for the new Accra\u2013Kumasi Expressway, leaving just 6km metres to completion\u2014far ahead of the original 20-week schedule. The Accra- Kumasi Expressway is one of President John Mahama’s big-push agenda<\/p>\n
Originally, the road distance between Accra and Kumasi via the N6 highway measured about 198.7 kilometres. Still, the new expressway adopts a direct, purpose-built alignment that trims the journey to 176 kilometers,\u00a0cutting travel time from up to 8 hours to about 2 hours. As of early September 2026, the military team has completed 99.8% of corridor clearing, with full handover expected imminently to enable construction of the six-lane, dual-carriageway expressway, projected for completion by 2028.<\/p>\n
Slash transport costs for passengers and freight, boosting trade between Ghana\u2019s two largest cities. Enhance road safety by eliminating dangerous stretches of the old N6 and reducing accident risks. Stimulate regional development, creating jobs and attracting investment along the corridor, including in agriculture and logistics. Strengthen national cohesion, linking communities more efficiently and supporting social mobility. The expressway will also benefit Ghana\u2019s neighbors Burkina Faso, Mali, Niger, Togo, and C\u00f4te d\u2019Ivoire\u2014who rely on Ghana\u2019s ports for imports and exports:<\/p>\n
