Dr. Kwadwo Afari-Gyan, the longest-serving Chairman of Ghana’s Electoral Commission, called the practice of buying and selling votes in broad daylight during national elections a “shameful spectacle” during his keynote address at the Constitution Day Public Lecture on January 8, 2024.

In contrast to previous traditions, where such operations were clandestine and, in his opinion, unlawful, Dr. Afari-Gyan highlighted the distinction between the present brazenness of candidates openly purchasing votes and citizens selling their votes in broad daylight.

The longest-serving Chairman of Ghana’s Electoral Commission, Dr. Kwadwo Afari-Gyan, called the practice of buying and selling votes during national elections in broad daylight a “shameful spectacle” when he gave the keynote address at the Constitution Day Public Lecture on January 8, 2024.

Dr. Afari-Gyan stressed the contrast between the contemporary practices, in which candidates publicly buy votes and citizens sell their votes in broad daylight, and the previous ones, in which such actions were clandestine and, in his opinion, unlawful.

At the event, which was put on by the University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA) Law School and the One Ghana Movement, Dr. Afari-Gyan also lamented the regular occurrence of political pledges being broken. He thinks that politicians usually prioritize making and keeping promises over putting forth particular policies.

He questioned the politicians’ sincerity in keeping many of their promises, calling broken promises “a millstone around a politician’s neck,” and threatening party members who were not originally involved in making the promises.

“One cannot be sure that even the politicians themselves believe that they can fulfil the numerous promises that they make,” the former EC boss stated.

A second release from a $3 billion International Monetary Fund emergency loan would be made possible by an agreement to restructure $5.4 billion in debt to China and members of the Paris Club of creditor nations.

Abebe Selassie, director of the IMF’s Africa section, expressed his hope that the fund’s Executive Board will have time to consider authorizing the payment before the year ends.

“Bilateral official debt is significant, but not the lion’s share of the debt challenge of Ghana,” Selassie stated to Reuters.

“Within this stock of obligations that Ghana has to bilateral creditors, the share to the Paris Club is fairly large, So we’re hoping that there will be a quick meeting of minds.”

When asked when creditors would come to an agreement that would allow the IMF to approve the next loan tranche, Selassie replied, “Hopefully within the next six to eight weeks.”

Ghana, an oil, cocoa, and gold producer, is negotiating a debt restructuring with its bilateral and commercial creditors in the midst of the greatest economic crisis in a generation. The country has been shut out of international financial markets due to the spiralling costs of its domestic debt.

According to a government presentation to investors, it aims to restructure $20 billion of the entire external debt, which was estimated to be around $30 billion at the end of 2022.

To effectively execute the $3 billion loan agreement from the IMF, Ghana plans to reduce interest payments on its external debt by around $10.5 billion over the course of the next three years.

It is reorganizing its external obligations through the Common Framework, a debt restructuring program designed for developing countries in response to the coronavirus pandemic by the Group of 20 major economies.

China has been blamed for holding up the process, a claim it disputes, and the process has been criticized for its delays.

“There’s been some learning on the Chinese side because they’re new creditors,” Selassie stated. “Hopefully going forward… we’ll be getting much more rapid response from all official creditors.”

The Omanhene of the Techiman Traditional Area, Oseadeyo Akumfi Ameyaw IV commissioned the Krobo Complex Palace and was blessed by the Catholic Bishop of the Techiman Diocese Most Reverend, Dominic Yeboah Nyarko.

The same colorful occasion was used to honor Oseadeye Asa Akompanin on his 70th birthday and 40 years anniversary as the chief of Krobo.

Oseadeyo Akumfi Amayaw IV said Oyeadeye Asa Akompanin played a major role in the establishment of the Krobo Nursing Training College and the Krobo Day Senior High School.

Apart from releasing lands for the establishment of the Nursing College, Oseadye Asa Akompanin provided the school with accommodation from his personal purse.

The Krobohene, Oseadeye Asa Akompanin provided an outstanding palace with a double apartment and shared it with his queen mother, Nana Amobea Dufie. This has been the first time that a chief has provided a Palace including a Toyota RAV4 vehicle to his queen mother in the Techiman Traditional Area.

The Omanhene, Oseadeyo Akumfi Ameyaw IV in his address urged other chiefs to emulate the effort of the Krobohene, Asa Akompanin.

Krobohene, Oseadeye Asa Akompanin praised the people of Krobo and the traditional chiefs and queen mothers for their support which has helped him to reach this far. He charged the youth to take this education with all seriousness. He said without education, he wouldn’t have achieved his dreams.

It was one of the most colorful occasions to have witnessed.

The NPP faithful, Nana Ameyaw explained to the Nkyeremu News that, the Techiman north assembly confronted him on the 7th of December 2016 to fix Tuobodom Technical secondary and the Tuobodom Roman Catholic school that were both hit by the rainstorm.

According to Nana Ameyaw, his company by the name, Kofi Ash construction limited secured a loan of 550,000 cedis to renovate the two schools on time to be used for academic work.

Nana Ameyaw said the work assigned to him in 2016 was completed on time for use, but the assembly has paid only 125,000 cedis and were paid in bits.

Nana Ameyaw Manu is worried that the assembly deducted VAT on the money that was paid as part payment due to him.

Nana Ameyaw said the money has now lost its value completely and any further delay apart from the deadline will compel him to take court action.

Nana Ameyaw further said, he provided a pickup for both Techiman north and south assembles for the 2016 campaign, but the party has turned their back on him. He said the locked money largely contributed to the relegation of the Techiman Eleven Wonders football club to division one.

Nana Ameyaw said it has also badly affected his farming business and other jobs, as he has gone bankrupt.
