In a stunning twist to the 2025 La Liga season, Valencia CF delivered a significant blow to Real Madrid’s title ambitions with a dramatic 2-1 victory at the Mestalla Stadium on Sunday evening.

Coming into the match with just 8 games remaining, Madrid was in hot pursuit of league leaders Barcelona, needing a win to stay in contention for the Spanish crown. But Valencia had other plans and played spoiler in front of a roaring home crowd. Mbappe will be blamed for missing an early penalty.

The away team took an early lead in the 19th minute through rising star Javi Guerra, who slotted home a low-driven shot past Thibaut Courtois after a quick counterattack. Madrid responded with pressure and possession but struggled to break through Valencia’s well-organized defence. Real Madrid was able to make it 1-1 in the 53 minute of the game.

Two minutes to end the extra time, Valencia doubled their lead with a spectacular strike from distance by veteran midfielder Hugo Guillamón, sending the Mestalla into euphoria and Madrid into panic. Real Madrid was finally trying for an equalizer, but all efforts failed. The final whistle confirmed a result that could decide the fate of the title race. The loss will make the difference 6 points behind Barcelona with only 8 matches remaining.

For Valencia, the win was more than symbolic. It lifted them into the top six and strengthened their chances of qualifying for European competition next season — a remarkable turnaround for a team that battled relegation just a year ago.

As the dust settles, one thing is clear: Real Madrid’s dream of lifting the 2025 La Liga title has officially ended and it was Valencia who wrote the final chapter.
