The Bono East Regional Minister, Hon. Francis Owusu Antwi, has affirmed that the establishment of an airport in Techiman is a matter of national importance, given the town’s strategic location and vibrant business activities. This assurance was given during his recent courtesy call on the chiefs and people of the Techiman Traditional Area at the Techiman Palace.
Hon. Francis Owusu Antwi emphasised that the development of the Techiman Airport is not just a regional project but a national concern. He acknowledged the significance of the airport in enhancing transportation and economic growth, considering Techiman’s position as a major commercial hub in Ghana’s Bono East Region. The minister expressed the government’s commitment to seeing the project through despite the delays it had faced over the years.
The Acting Chief of the Techiman Traditional Area, Nana Owusu Gyare II, emphasised the traditional authorities’ commitment to the project. He revealed that the chiefs have released over 3,000 acres of land for the construction of the airport, showing their support and readiness to collaborate with the government. Nana Owusu Gyare II also noted that the project had originally commenced during the administration of former President John Agyekum Kufuor but had been stalled for over a decade.
Hon. Owusu Antwi assured the chiefs and the people that measures are underway to revive the airport project. He stressed the importance of the airport to the economy of Techiman and the broader Bono East Region, noting that improved air transport infrastructure would attract businesses, facilitate trade, and create employment opportunities.
In addition to the airport, the regional minister outlined plans to improve road infrastructure in the area to address traffic congestion. Among these plans are the construction of the Techiman Ring Road and the development of dual carriageways along some key routes in the region. These road projects are aimed at improving mobility, easing traffic flow, and boosting regional development.
The minister mentioned that the government is keen on ensuring that these infrastructural projects are executed efficiently to support the growing population and commercial activities in Techiman and its environs. He called for continued cooperation from the chiefs, opinion leaders, and residents to facilitate the smooth implementation of the project.
The visit to the Techiman Palace was part of the regional minister’s broader initiative to engage stakeholders on critical development issues and garner support for government projects aimed at improving the quality of life for the people of Bono East.
Overall, the revival of the Techiman Airport and the planned road upgrades symbolise a strategic push by the government to boost infrastructure and economic growth in the region, promising a brighter future for the people of Techiman and beyond.
