The Member of Parliament for Ablekuma West, Hon. Ursula Owusu-Ekuful, and Hon Ibrahim Murtala Muhammad, an MP for Tamale Central, got into a verbal altercation on the House floor on Wednesday over offensive remarks made about the Human Sexual Rights and Ghanaian Family Values Bill (LGBT+) debate on Wednesday, July 5, 2023, during the bill’s second reading.
The verbal altercation between the two happened after Hon. Murtala allegedly accused Hon. Ursula Owusu as a practitioner of LGBTQ.
Murtala apparently whispered from the rear that Ursula practised same-sex marriage, and Ursula’s response seemed to deviate from the widespread condemnation of the conduct.
Murtala did not speak into the microphone, thus it was impossible to consider what she said to be an official statement, but Ursula claimed to have heard it. She supposedly indicated that Murtala was crazy in her response as well.
After she finished speaking, the MP for Ablekuma West drew the Second Deputy Speaker’s attention once more and sought an apology from the MP for Tamale Central.
When prompted to retract the comment by the Deputy Speaker, Murtala claimed that because he had not spoken into the microphone, he could not be expected to do so.
Hon. Murtala defended that he has not made such unpalatable statements against the Minister responsible for Communication and Digitalisation, Hon. Ursula Owusu-Ekuful.
But, Hon. Owusu-Ekuful furiously said he heard the Tamale Central MP, Hon. Murtala of accusing her as a practitioner of LGBTQ.
When prompted to retract the comment by the Deputy Speaker, Murtala claimed that because he had not spoken into the microphone, he could not be expected to do so.
After the House had unanimously adopted the report on the bill championed by the MP for Asante Akim North, Andy Appiah-Kubi, the Second Deputy Speaker, Andrew Asiamah, gave time to members to contribute to the bill.
During the debate, Speaker of Parliament, Rt Hon. S. K Bagbin gave the opportunity to any Mp out of the 275 who is against the LGBTQ bill to stand up and none of them stood up.
