An additional US$145 million in International Development Association (IDA) credit funding has been approved by the World Bank for the Ghana Secondary Cities Support Program. By doing this, an already-existing program of assistance to secondary cities that was decided upon in 2018 can be expanded to serve 35 secondary cities nationwide. The extra funding will support the development of fundamental urban infrastructure and institutional capacity for urban administration in 35 secondary cities, including the six recently established regional capitals.

The additional finance to the Ghana Secondary Cities Support Program is part of the Government’s broader urban development and decentralization program. It will continue to strengthen local systems and focus on secondary cities by providing them incentives to improve their performance as city managers. The program will also assist regional and national institutions to provide secondary cities with the support needed for effective urban management and service delivery.
