Today marks one year since Lionel Messi made his signing announcement for Inter Miami, which was a game-changing event for both American soccer and the Major League Soccer. Within weeks, Luis Suárez joined before the 2024 season, and Sergio Busquets and Jordi Alba, two former Barcelona colleagues, followed.
A player with close ties to Messi, Ángel Di María, has been linked to a move to Miami in recent weeks. Neymar Jr., the Brazilian superstar who played with Messi and Suárez in Barcelona’s renowned “MSN” strikeforce, has been linked to the Herons as a result of such rumors.
Messi was questioned about the possibility of Neymar joining Inter Miami to bring the superstar back together in an infobae interview.
“No, I’m not sure. The fact is that things are hard right now; he’s in Arabia and, I believe, has a year left on his contract. He had a challenging year thus far, missing out on the Copa America since he was unable to compete in the majority of the games in Arabia due to a protracted injury.” All is still not lost after his serving, why not possible MSN Messi said!
“After that, I don’t know. Life has so many turns and turns that anything can happen, but I don’t think so today,” Messi went on.
It appears very difficult at this point to find a place in the Herons’ tight cost budget for another player with high wage expectations, as Messi says. Neymar’s two-year contract with Al-Hilal of Saudi Arabia is estimated to be around $175 million, a significant amount more than even Messi makes in Major League Soccer.
Neymar, who suffered an ACL tear in October of last year, is also out with an injury at the moment and is not yet back on the pitch. It is hard to find a sporting reason for Neymar to join Tata Martino’s team this year as Messi and Suárez currently play two attacking roles, but that could change in the future.
Suárez looks every second of his 37-year-old, and the Herons are limited by his lack of mobility, even if he has scored 12 goals in 16 MLS games. He is only signed for this season at Chase Stadium per his contract, and it doesn’t appear likely that he will stay into the 2024 season. Neymar would most likely have to wait until he becomes a free agent in the summer of 2025, but if Suárez departs the team at the end of his current contract, Miami may have room for another outstanding attacking player.
For the time being, Lionel Messi is concentrated on helping Argentina win a major international event three times in a row, an achievement that would solidify their place among the greatest national teams in history. He would add yet another chapter to his amazing sporting legacy on July 14 if he could win Copa América at Miami’s Hard Rock Stadium.
