The supporters’ excitement was visible in their countenances. They believed there was still time to win. Their expectations were, in fact, well-directed. Ghana regained the lead three minutes after the equalizer when a shot by Fataw Issahaku deflected off the goalkeeper and into the net.
At this very moment, the stadium was erupting with singing, chanting, and jumping—you name it, and it was happening. The colourful, recognizable joy dances were performed by several fan unions.
On Saturday morning and a few hours into the advertized time, Shatta Wale kept fuelling the energy of his teeming fans with posts on his various social media platforms that he was ready to perform.
Interestingly, there had been word on the streets of social media which was confirmed by a communique from the office of the Dean of Students of the University of Ghana that the show had been cancelled but Shatta seemed ready for a show.
When Shatta Wale was denied a performance because of “security reasons,” he took use of the occasion to express his ire and anger at Stonebwoy.
Shatta Wale went on the offensive on social media, accusing Stonebwoy of being the reason behind his show’s cancellation to avoid playing at the same location.
Shatta Wale insulted Stonebwoy in a tense TikTok video, drawing his family into an argument.
He said that Stonebwoy had forced the university administration to call off the event by using his power.
Investigations subsequently showed that Stonebwoy was not involved in the cancellation, despite Shatta Wale’s assertions.
In a series of posts on X (previously known as Twitter), entertainment analyst Olele Salvador claimed that the event had been cancelled by university authorities for lack of prior consent.
“I can report that the highly anticipated Reunion Rave and Artiste Night at James Topp Nelson Yankah—which featured Shatta Wale as the main act—has been cancelled.
As part of a two-day alumni engagement, the Hall had scheduled a Reunion Rave and Artiste Night, according to a source within the university that DTS Intel Africa talked with. But Olele wrote, “The event was canceled by the Office of the Dean of Student Affairs because it was not included in the original program outline that was submitted for approval.
Sammy Baah Flex, Shatta Wale’s manager, claims that despite the event happening, Shatta Wale was prohibited from performing because of a “command from above.”
Shatta Wale was hired by Wave Africa, a youth-oriented marketing and communication agency, to play at the Reunion Rave Artiste Night on Saturday. Wave Africa has confirmed this.
The management of Jean Topp Nelson Yankah Hall approached the agency two months ago, according to a press statement the agency sent today, June 10, asking them to provide an artist and coordinate the event on their behalf.
On June 5, a Wednesday, they signed the agreement after concluding their discussions. This led them to negotiate and execute a contract with Shatta Wale to play on Saturday, and they then distributed fliers to advertise the show.
On Friday, June 7, 2024, the team reported that they came upon an internet announcement from the Dean of Students’ Office regarding the event’s cancellation.
They assured them that the outstanding difficulties with the Dean of Students office had been settled when they spoke with the hall executives, who were in charge of securing the venue following the contract.
Despite the promise, they went forward with the event. However, on Saturday, during the sound check and set up, the Legon campus security interfered, claiming that there was a “command from above.”
They said that after meeting with the dean of students, a delegation from their team was told that the event could go on without Shatta Wale’s performance, and they followed that decision.
It is a fact that. Shatta Wale and Stonebwoy were reportedly forced to sign a bond by the police promising not to perform at the same location again after their altercation at the 2019 Ghana Music Awards.
The choice was taken to prevent a recurrence of the regrettable incident in which the two artists fought and brandished weapons.
That was cited by Stonebwoy’s manager as the reason for the band’s cancellation of a Sallahfest performance earlier this year.
