In a decisive electoral victory, Master Gordon Yaw Antwi has been elected the new chairman of the Techiman South Garages Association of Ghana, securing 280 out of 402 valid votes cast during the association’s recent leadership elections. His main contender, Master George K. Frimpong, received 120 votes, while six ballots were rejected. The election, marked by high member turnout, signals a fresh mandate for Antwi to address long-standing challenges within the association, particularly internal divisions and land tenure insecurity affecting garage operators. The 4 candidates were declared the winners by the EC, Regina Ampoe of the Techiman Electoral Office.
Alongside Antwi, the association also elected new executives to key positions. Master Mensah Simon won the vice chairmanship with 219 votes, defeating Owusu Benjamin, who garnered 185 votes. In the organiser category, Asabre Francis emerged victorious with 155 votes, ahead of Awudu Fatao (125 votes) and Samuel Gyasi (122 votes). Fosu Augustine, who contested for the treasury position, was unopposed and assumed office automatically. All four newly elected officials were sworn in to begin their duties.
In his acceptance speech, Chairman-elect Antwi called for unity among members, identifying division as a major obstacle that has hindered the association’s progress. He pledged to foster cohesion and collaborative action to strengthen the group’s bargaining power and operational stability. A critical issue he highlighted is the persistent threat of eviction by landowners, which has forced many garage operators to relocate frequently, disrupting their businesses and causing loss of loyal customers. Antwi emphasised that addressing land insecurity is a top priority for his administration, as fear of eviction has undermined members’ confidence and investment in their workplaces.
The election comes amid broader urbanisation pressures in Techiman, where unplanned spatial development and land disputes increasingly affect informal sector operators such as garage workers. With Antwi’s leadership, the association aims to negotiate more secure land arrangements and advocate for policies that protect the livelihoods of its members.
