It is very sad that most drivers are being reminded without defense at the law court. After the police have made his statement against the poor innocent driver, all that we mostly hear from the sitting judge is are you guilty or innocent? At the moment he says I am innocent, he is reminded for two weeks or more.
Due to such unfair trials in our various courts, drivers at the law court only say, my lord, I am guilty so that the judge will have mercy on them and give him an instant fine between GHC 500-2,000.
The police can send a driver to the law court just because the wiper or the indicator light was not functioning. They had forgotten that vehicles are just like human beings. You will be fit in the morning, but before you reach your office you may fall sick.
A wiper of a vehicle can break at any time, an indicator will not function when you get to the traffic light. The worst misconduct is when police seize driver’s licenses because the headlight is not functioning. This is crazy and will only happen to minor drivers.
These are some of the points that the police picked most of the innocent drivers and charged with big sums of money, when they fail to pay, he is dragged to court on such minor offenses, yet the judge will not bother to find out the detail, but only ask, are you guilty nor innocent? It is a fact that the police and our judges are making driving professing a sad business!
However, a few of the judges and the police are good ones, they educate and give warnings to such minor road offenses. I know a judge who dismissed such a minor case at the law court. The authorities in Ghana should wake up.
