The poor farmers’ produce determined by the buyers drains their hard labour. This needs to be addressed. It was a mockery for the agricultural minister, Owusu Akoto Afriyie, who decided to supply foodstuffs to his ministry.
The major challenge the farmer addressed was the poor, bad road network leading to the communities where they farm. This has given the market women the upper hand to keep cheating the farmers at all times.
At Nsuta Sreso of Tanoso in the Techiman of the Bono east region, their main livelihood is cassava, yams and vegetable cultivation. According to the farmers, without the market women, all their farm produce would have gone to waste. In spite of how they cheated them, they were still happy for their businesses with the market women since they had no option.
Half a bag of cabbage is selling at the farm at GH 400. What they describe as a half bag at the farm is over 6 feet high. The situation of the cassava is not different. A full load of MotorKing is selling at GH 1,300. However, 2 pieces of cassava tubers are selling at the market at GH 10. The same bag of cabbage is selling in Accra at GH1,200.
The market women who spoke off camera said transportation charges most often end them in losses.
When will the poor farmer gain from their sweat in Ghana?
