Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has promised that, upon taking government in 2025, university graduates will no longer be required to perform national service.
On Wednesday, February 7, the Vice President revealed this to Ghanaians in a speech at the Kofi Ohene Konadu Auditorium at the University of Professional Studies in Accra.
The aim, according to Dr Bawumia, a presidential candidate, is to let graduates of universities find employment after graduation without having to fulfil their national service requirement beforehand.
“My government will suggest exempting from national service those who, upon graduation, find employment. Students will have the choice of performing national service or not, and it will no longer be required of them, he stated.
As per the Vice President, firms can leverage this decision to hire students from campuses who finish their university studies.
He continued by saying that his government would work with the business sector to create a National Open University of Ghana, with an emphasis on technical and vocational skills.
To educate children for the workplace of the fourth industrial revolution, Dr. Bawumia stated that his government would require robotics and coding instruction in senior high schools.
“To meet the demands of the fourth industrial revolution and create jobs, I will strengthen the reorientation of the educational system toward STEM, AI, and robotics.”
