Parliament has authorized a minimum sentence of three years in prison and a maximum sentence of five years in prison for individuals who are proven to have intentionally sponsored, supported, or assisted LGBTQ+ activities.
In addition, persons found guilty of such crimes face a minimum penalty of six months and a maximum sentence of three years.
During parliamentary deliberations on the clause-by-clause revision of the bill addressing the development of proper human sexual rights and Ghanaian family values, Sam Nartey George, the MP for Ningo Prampram, stated the rationale behind the punitive measures.
He underlined that the public is more interested in the advocacy and promotion of such activities than in people’s private behaviour.
George explained the sentence structure by saying, “The punishment ranges from a minimum of six months to a maximum of three years for individuals caught engaging in these activities themselves.”
But the punishment rises to a minimum of three years and a maximum of five years for those who actively support, sponsor or promote such goals.
