A Ghanaian investigative journalist, Anas Aremeyaw Anas has been awarded $18 million by an Essex County Jury in a defamation claim against Kennedy Agyapong. The 2024 NPP presidential candidate and former Assin Central member of parliament. The Ghanaian High Court dismissed the same case. The question that many Ghanaians ask is, why was the defamation case dismissed?

Would Ghanaians trust the law courts based on the dismissal of the Anas’ defamation suit against Hon Kenedy Agyapon?

In January 2023, Anas’ defamation suit against Kennedy Agyapong was dismissed by the Accra High Court, which was presided over by Justice Eric Baah. Do you recall that? Although Anas was unable to substantiate his claim, the court found that his statements were factual and might be construed as defamatory. For defamatory materials the MP disseminated to undermine the investigative journalist who had published a report on corruption, Anas had requested that the High Court award GH¢25 million in aggravated damages.
