You Reap What You Sow: Cassava Farm in Techiman Akurufi Ready for MarketAfter months of dedication, sweat, and care, the hard work of farmers in Techiman Akurufi has paid off. The town’s largest cassava farm is finally ready for market, and excitement is building among both producers and traders across the Bono East Region.
Located just on the outskirts of Techiman, the 2-acre cassava plantation, initiated by a local farming cooperative, is now bearing fruit — or more precisely, fresh, healthy cassava roots, ready for harvest and distribution. The initiative was spearheaded in mid-2024 to boost local agriculture, creating jobs and other businesses dependent on cassava as a raw material for foodstuffs.
“It’s been a long road, but today we’re proud,” said Kwame Baffour, chairman of the Akurufi Farmers Association. “The land gave us exactly what we gave it: care, consistency, and patience. Truly, you reap what you sow.”
Cassava is a staple food crop in Ghana, commonly processed into gari, banku, fufu, and industrial starch. The harvest from Techiman Akurufi is expected to supply both local markets and processing factories in Techiman, Sunyani, and parts of the Northern Region.
Early estimates suggest the farm could yield over 10 metric tonnes, a figure described as “very promising” by agricultural officers in the municipality. Beyond the economic benefits, the farm has also generated seasonal employment for more than 15 local workers, many of whom are women and youth.
“This harvest means money for my children’s school fees,” said Ama Konadu, a single mother who worked during the planting and weeding phases. “We need more of these projects in rural areas.”
The Techiman Municipal Agriculture Directorate praised the farmers’ resilience and encouraged other communities to invest in large-scale food crop cultivation to help strengthen Ghana’s food security and reduce dependency on imported products.
As trucks begin loading cassava for transport, traders are already lining up to secure their share of the harvest. With market prices favorable and demand high, the farmers of Techiman Akurufi are poised for a profitable season.
Indeed, the scene at the farm is one of celebration and relief a powerful reminder that in agriculture, as in life, the land rewards those who remain faithful to the work.
