The Minister of Information, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, has expressed serious concern about the inadequate salary and remuneration systems for journalists in the country. He highlighted that issues of poor salaries significantly contributed to the low press freedom index in 2023
The welfare and economic situations of Ghanaian journalists are the one factor that, when you read the report in detail, brought Ghana down the most on the 2023 edition of the World Press Freedom Index.
“As professionals in this field, you and I know that many of our brothers and sisters receive no pay at the end of the month. Many never even receive the statutory payment their employers should provide on their behalf.
Many journalists do not have the appropriate pension deductions done and saved in a pension fund for the day they are no longer employed. These are topics that journalists need to be aware of because if you talk about them, your bosses won’t be pleased.
We enjoy discussing the problems facing different industries. But for once, let’s focus on this problem in our sector as well,” he said.
